Sean Nowell

Sean Nowell, originally from Alabama, received degrees from Berklee College of Music in Jazz Composition and Manhattan School of Music in Jazz Performance. He has composed and improvised film scores, music for ballet and theatre, 20th century classical music, big band, and small jazz ensembles and has pushed the timbral boundaries of the saxophone and flute by integrating electronic effects pedals into his musical language. He has traveled and collaborated with dancers, actors, painters, stilt walkers, and acrobats on multiple international tours as Musical Director for Bond Street Theatre and has represented The Istanbul Jazz Festival at universities around Turkey with his Multimedia Electro-Jazz Ensemble, The Kung-Fu Masters. With his Hiphop collective, Soul Inscribed, he has represented the United States as Artistic Ambassador in Russia, Indonesia, Taiwan and Mauritius. He also tours Europe with his NYC/Stockholm acoustic jazz band, The New York Jazz Exchange. He is active on the NYC live performance scene with regular engagements at Smalls, The 55 Bar, Groove, The Blue Note and hosts weekly Free-Improv R&B Funk jams at The Let Love Inn with his organ quartet Subtonics. He recorded with Stanley Clarke and George Duke for the movie "Soul Men", co-wrote/improvised the score for the Nick Nolte movie "Off the Black" and has released the albums The NYJE, FIREWERKS, THE SEEKER, STOCKHOLM SWINGIN' and THE KUNG-FU MASTERS for Posi-Tone Records.
