By the age of three Phyllisia Ross, known by her stage name, Phyllisia, knew she was destined to be an entertainer. Her father envisioned her becoming a medical doctor. However, convinced that Phyllisia knew what she wanted, her father bought her a piano at the age of five, after he saw his daughter playing the neighbor's piano.
